FFXIII Versus, (pronounced "Vehrsas" in Latin meaning "A
change of direction" and "Versus" in the English sense as
well. Directed by the one and only Tetsuya Nomura with the production crew
from Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy XIII: Versus is the PS3 sequel to FFXIII
and promises to be an Action RPG.
The game features a dark, spikey haired young man with great power and is
said to be a dark tragedy, unlike any other Final Fantasy.
Versus was inspired from a line in Shakespeare's Play "Hamlet, Act
II, Scene II": "There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking
makes it so." and revolves around a royal palace, where our main chacarter
is a member of, in the last City that searches to control the "Crystals".
The setting is unusually real-world like and the City's culture is very
similar to our own, however outside the City, lies an almost medieval land
where uncivilised barbarians are in a constant fight with the last City
to gain control of the powerful "Crystals".
Versus' theme is all about "friendship", "bonding" and
"sleep", and Nomura warns that this game will be the most dark
and tragic of all Final Fantasy's and jokes that you will still be crying
over it a week after completing the game! However it is not intended to
be "a tragedy for tragedy's sake" and certainly does not wish
for people to finish it and regret ever playing it, it's simply the only
way the story could be told, he says.
As the only footage released for Versus is all CGI, it appears that the
game is far from complete, so don't expect a release for 2007, as the eagerly
awaited FFXIII Versus Action RPG, unlike any other, seems to be set for
an uncomfirmed 2008 release.
Update: As of E3 2013, Final Fantasy Versus XIII has changed development to next gen consoles (PlayStation 4 and Xbox One) and has been rebranded as Final Fantasy XV along with a brand new trailer and gameplay videos and a statement from Tetsuya Nomura. While the game is still a part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis (Final Fantasy XIII etc.) project, it will have no physical connection to the FFXIII series and is a new title in the Final Fantasy Universe in its own right. Stay tuned for further updates!
